Adam with urgency: "Can you leave on the 22nd?"
Me with confusion: "Sure, why?"
Adam: "Just tell me if you can, quick"
Me: "OK, uh...yeah, sure"
Adam: "OK. I got your ticket back. But it is going to L.A. Pack waterproof clothes."
Me: "What?"
Adam: "Just do it"
Thus, the guessing began. Tanya and I and everyone else I spoke with over the next week (including the person next to me on the flight out there who was from L.A.) had fun guessing where Adam could be taking us in California - or maybe he was just sending me there by myself?
I met him at his gate and he started video taping as I went through his backpack to find the surprise. After a long drawn out search and once I was thoroughly embarrassed by the excessive videoing I found the surprise: A plane ticket to Auckland, New Zealand - return date 3 weeks later! Can you believe that?! Me neither! Here's the short video of the reaction:
Yup, I am STILL in shock. Still.
A 12 hour overnight flight and we are in Auckland at the campervan rental to pick up our mobile hotel for the next three weeks. It is fall there right now and I had packed for a weekend in L.A. so I wore the same pair of jeans and light hooded sweatshirt everyday. The first day it was raining hard for most of the day so we just drove to start our adventure on the other side of the North Island, stopping at a little town and at little stands along the road to buy kiwi and feijoas.
Large Kiwi
Wild turkeys everywhere - but no one eats turkey.
Old fashioned buildings decorate the small northern coastal towns.
The campervan. At least it is not obvious that we are tourists.
